Quit asking everyone else how you should live your live? If you want true freedom you needed to take complete responsibility for every facet of your life and start crafting who you really want to be, not what everyone else’s want you to be, but truly who you really want to be.
1. reliance on one’s own powers and resources rather than those of others.
Let me tell you, this was a hard lesson that took me 50 years to really embrace and learned. I am still learning but I am more aware of every aspect of self-reliance. There is a lot of etheric believes about self-reliance and spirituality out there. From self improvement course to talks about the universe and consciousness. None of that is wrong, but what gets me is that they all look at humanity’s from the outside in. I am not going to preach in this segment about philosophy or spirituality, but what I want to do is to give you some simple and practical steps to practice self-reliance and then live life in your own terms, as everyone should.
Step 1: The Body – learn to become aware of your body first. Best way to accomplish this is by finding a quiet place, sit or lay back, close your eyes, and take few deep breaths. As you do that, pay attention to your breath, then to your legs, then to your hips, then to your back, and so forth and so on… hope you get the picture, just observe the different parts of your body. Do this for at least six minutes every day until you find yourself paying attention to your body from the moment that you wake up. The idea is that you understand and become aware that your body is part of you and not that you are your body.
Step 2: Your Thoughts – Once you become observant of your body, expand your awareness to observe and watch your thoughts. Same as above find a quiet place, sit or lay back, close your eyes, and take few deep breaths. As you do that pay attention to your mind, Let your thought pass through your mind, don’t be judgmental, or try to interact, answer or get emotional about your thoughts, just let them be and watch. Do this for at least six minutes every day until you find yourself paying attention to your thoughts like you are listening or observing someone else. The idea is that you understand and become aware that your are not your thought or your mind, but that your mind is is part of you.
Step 3: Feelings and Emotions – When you are able to observe your body, watch your thoughts, then learn to watch your feelings and emotions. Like in the two steps above find a quiet place, sit or lay back, close your eyes, and take few deep breaths. As you do that pay attention to how you feel about your body, then let your thought start passing through and watch how you feel about those thoughts. Don’t be judgmental, just observe your emotions. Do this for at least six minutes every day until you find yourself paying attention to your body, your thoughts and your emotions, get all your senses involved and observe. At this stage you already got the idea that you are not your atomic body, you are not what you think, and you are not your emotions. They are three components of the real you.
When you are watchful of your body, thoughts, feelings, and emotions that is when your awareness will begin to operate from a state of inner harmony.
Aware of your own awareness – When you live from a position of awareness that is when you realize how cunning the mind is, and how great it is at rationalizing. Rationalizing is not awareness, awareness means that whatsoever is happening in the moment is happening with complete state that you are fully present. You are living in the NOW! By the way there is a great book by Eckhart Tolle titled The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment that I hardly recommend.
People meditate to be happy, but in reality when you are happy you don’t need to meditate because being happy is being in a meditative state. Happiness is the highest stage of vibrational harmonization. In other words is the ZONE where you want to be!
A lot of people confuse being happy with superficial pleasures, pleasures that deal with your senses. They are only trying to achieve happiness through the body and mind. These moments of pleasure are momentary, and always have the opposite feeling.
If you practice the three steps above (by the way if you didn’t get it, that is meditating) I guarantee you a state of happiness and happiness will bring you levels of awareness that you didn’t know you could achieve before. And why is this so important? When you are happy you are aware, and when you are aware of your live you fully participate in living without boundaries and with total freedom!
The vagabond way of living is to be fully happy and aware, it is to venture into the unknown, to jump into freedom. By living the unknown your ego falls apart and the real you begins to emerge. Become the change you want to be.
